It’s true that HBO Max has officially ordered a second season of Tokyo Vice. In June 2022, the show received a second-season renewal. Tokyo Vice’s return date is still to be determined, but we do know that it will happen sometime around 2023.
Tokyo Vice was included as one of the programs that will receive a new season in 2023 in an HBO/HBO Max teaser trailer for their schedule. Unfortunately, the season 1 footage was displayed, making it difficult to determine how far along the second season’s production is at this time.

Tokyo Vice Season 2 Plot
Spoilers for the first season of Tokyo Vice are present. Jake Adelstein’s memoir on his experience covering the Yakuza and the police beat in 1990s Tokyo served as the basis for the television show Tokyo Vice. There have been some concerns regarding how much of Adelstein’s book is accurate, but we’ll save that discussion for another time.
In the first season, Jake accepted a position as a police beat reporter for a reputable Tokyo newspaper. After some initial difficulties, he establishes tight bonds with several individuals that enable him to delve deeply into the Yakuza. This includes his editor Eimi, Detective Katagiri from the police, Sato from the Yakuza, and Samantha, an American hostess.
As Jake looks into a series of deaths that appear to be suicides, he learns unexpected connections to the criminal underground. However, the danger increases as he approaches closer. Apart from Jake, we watch Samantha work to raise money to start her own club, but she encounters difficulties due to her past interactions with the Yakuza.
Samantha is also worried about her friend Polina, who goes missing and later turns out to have been murdered. Then there is Sato, who is gradually rising through the Yakuza ranks but who exhibits ambivalence over his career choice.
Sato is attacked, stabbed, and left for dead at the end of season 1, although we are unsure if he survives or not. Was this an inside job because Sato was beginning to doubt his superiors, or was it an attack by a rival Yakuza family?
We never saw it anywhere, but Jin Miyamoto, the crooked cop, was being hauled far away by his former mafia employers after appearing to turn the corner. Although there is no official summary for Tokyo Vice season 2, here is what J.T. Rogers had to say about it:

As an HBO Max original series, Tokyo Vice can only be viewed by subscribers to the streaming service in the US (or anywhere HBO Max is offered). The first season is currently available for viewing in the UK on BBC iPlayer and Sky Go, Sky TV’s streaming service.
