Pedro Almodóvar wrote and will direct a short Western drama film called Strange Way of Life that will come out soon. Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal are in it. The film is Almodóvar’s second in English after The Human Voice, which came out in 2020.
In May 2023, Strange Way of Life will be shown for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival.
Release
In May 2023, the film will be shown for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie will be shown in Spanish theaters for the first time on May 26, 2023. Mubi will release the movie in Italy and Latin America, and Pathé will do the same in the UK. Sony Pictures Classics will put it out in all other countries, like the US, but not in France, Belgium, or Switzerland.

Production
In August 2022, most of the movie was shot in the Tabernas Desert area of Almera in southern Spain. An old Portuguese fado song by Amália Rodrigues is called “A Strange Way of Life.” Pedro Almodóvar’s production company, El Deseo, and Saint Laurent, whose head designer Anthony Vaccarello was also an associate director and the film’s costume designer, worked together to make the movie.
In September, Hawke revealed on Instagram that filming was done on the project. Almodovar worked with people like José Luis Alcaine (cinematography) and Alberto Iglesias (music) on a regular basis. Teresa Font was in charge of cutting the film.
The director was quoted on the Dua Lipa podcast as saying, “It’s a gay Western in the sense that there are two guys who love each other. It’s a deep look at what it means to be a man since the Western is a male genre. I can tell you this about the movie: it has a lot of Western themes. It has the shooter, the ranch, and the sheriff. What most Westerners don’t have is the kind of conversation between two men that I don’t think has ever been shown in a Western.
