Early Age
Jimmy Iovine was born to a working-class Catholic-Italian family on March 11, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. He briefly attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, but by the age of 19, he had pulled out and was working as a janitor at Record Plant Studios in New York City. Jimmy was exposed to the realm of music production through this position. He quickly shifted from cleaning the studios to assisting with fundamental production tasks. Ray Cicala, one of the engineers who taught Jimmy the techniques, had an impressive clientele and body of work.
In the early 1970s, on Easter morning, Jimmy received a phone call from Ray requesting him to assist an artist at the studio. After his mother reprimanded him for skipping Easter church services, Jimmy rushed to Record Plant Studios, where he soon realized that it wasn’t any ordinary artist. That was John Lennon.
Success
Jimmy sensed that Lennon was struggling with the composition “Stay in the Chair” and reworked it in the engineering booth. Jimmy continued to work on two more of Lennon’s solo albums, much to the delight of the former Beatles.
Working alongside John Lennon made Jimmy Iovine a celebrity. In the 1970s, he rose to prominence as one of the most sought-after music producers/engineers. He went on to produce albums for numerous artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, U2, Stevie Nicks, Simple Minds, Dire Straits, and Patti Smith.
The albums “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen, “Easter” by Patti Smith, “Damn the Torpedoes” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, “Bella Donna” by Stevie Nicks, “Under a Blood Red Sky” by U2 and “Love. Angel. Music. Baby” by Gwen Stefani are notable examples of albums produced or engineered by Jimmy Iovine.
