Professional Career of Ja Morant
Morant was discovered by the basketball program at Murray State University by chance in July of 2016 when assistant coach James Kane saw him playing a game in a camp’s auxiliary arena. Kane contacted head coach Matt McMahon, who subsequently offered Morant a scholarship after being impressed by the young man’s performance.
In November of 2017, Morant made his Murray State debut with a 118-61 victory against Brescia University. In a loss to Saint Louis University the following month, he recorded his first career double-double. Following this, Morant recorded his first triple-double in a victory over Eastern Illinois. Morant was named OVC Player of the Year following the regular season.
He helped Murray State qualify for the NCAA Tournament, where they ultimately fell to Florida State in the second round. Following this, Morant decided to declare for the NBA draft and forego his final two collegiate seasons.
